Annie Duke

Born as Anne LaBarr Lederer, Annie is known in the poker community as The Duke, Annie Legend, and The Duchess of Poker.

She was one of the first few women who pioneered the image of women as professional poker players. Her interest in poker was built on the foundation provided by her family.

She was raised knowing all about card games and the need to win at competitions. She went to college at Columbia University where she double majored in Psychology and in English. In the middle of her graduate course, she got married and moved to Billings, Colorado with her husband, Ben Duke.

Playing Poker actually came as a necessity for Annie when she needed to find a way to pay off the mortgage on their first house. It was her brother, already a successful poker player at that time, who suggested she try her hand in taking up poker full time in 1994.

On her first tournament, she was relatively successful, even ranking higher than her brother. By the end of the month, she won around $70,000. This made Annie decide to move to Las Vegas together with her husband to launch her career in poker. Ever since then, Annie has made her name in the poker playing industry.

She won a World Series of Poker bracelet when she beat more than two hundred other players in a tournament in 2004. Shortly after, she got invited to join the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions where she proceeded to defeat top poker player legends and won herself a cool $2 million in the process.

Aside from competing and playing poker, Annie is also a spokesperson for various poker organization. She used to write poker articles for the now defunct website UltimateBet where she was a sponsored pro.

Furthermore, she wrote a book entitled 'How I Raised, Folded, Bluffed, Flirted, Cursed, and Won Millions at the World Series of Poker.' Aside from authoring her very own book, she also released a couple of DVDs about guides mainly on how to win at Texas hold 'em.

Annie is considered a celebrity in her own right. She appeared in various productions like Poker After Dark, The Best Damn Poker Show, The Ellen Degeneres Show, Celebrity Apprentice (where she was a finalist against Joan Rivers), and a lot of other shows.

She coached poker players for a while which earned her much publicity when she coached Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Currently, she is teaching at a school for poker. Even with all these accomplishments under her belt, her first commitment is to her four kids. Her devotion is commendable as she makes it a point to make her children her priority.
