Idleminer Review

What is idleminer and why use it?

Datamining with Idleminer

One of the most powerful techniques for dominating your adversaries in online poker is to datamine their hand histories.

Every time you play one online poker hand at any poker room, all the actions that each player made during that particular hand are recorded in a small file, called a hand history file. Such files are used by advanced online poker software called poker trackers, which conduct deep statistical analysis of your opponents' patterns of play and leaks.

So every winning player uses one of these poker tracker software such as "Holdem Manager" or "Poker Tracker 3". Almost all Online Poker Rooms let you save your own hand histories, so this is what most players use: their own history. This is great as it let you check how you played, what mistakes you made, what your VPIP/PFR/AF statistics are, etc. And you can also study your competitors.

But there is one way to push this to the next level, and this is to acquire observed datamined hand histories.

Idleminer versus other poker datamining methods

By adding observed hand histories to your database, i.e. hands in which you did not sit at the table, you can study opponents that you never met before. Study when they fold, how they play their starting hands and all sorts of other features particular to each player.

And if you encounter them some time in the future, you will have a precise profile of how they play, and in most likelihood they won't know anything about you. A huge (almost unfair) advantage which will mean more money for you at the bank.

There is a rising proportion of online poker players employing this type of method as the game of poker is becoming more and more competitive.

There are two ways to get observed hand histories:

  1. Purchase hand histories: you can buy large hand history files containing hundreds of thousands or even millions of hands from some specialized vendors, such as HandHQ. The only thing you need to do with them is import them into your database with a few clicks of the mouse, and you are all set.
  2. Datamine hand histories yourself: doing it yourself means that you need a software that can open the poker room lobby for you, then open poker tables in the limits & game types that you specify and save these hand histories on your hard disk. This is what idleminer does. Idle means that once it is running, you have nothing else to do and it can run all night long.

The benefits of Idleminer

There are a few advantages for using idleminer versus handhq.

With respect to price, you only pay once for idleminer and you can use the software for years to come, datamining millions of hands while you sleep. If you prefer to buy poker hand histories, you need to pay each time.

Note that recent hand histories are more valuable. Because players change their style and because new players come, old players go. So ideally you have to maintain your database by only keeping the more recent hands. Another reason to do that is that if your database becomes too big, it will jam your entire PC, so you need to trim it once in a while.

Another advantage of idleminer is that you can tailor its hand grabbing facility to your exact needs, as you are perfectly in control and you know exactly what you are datamining.

Some people prefer to be more hands-on and they will probably use idleminer. Some people like to delegate some of the more tedious tasks, and they will opt for handhq histories.

One last word about getting additional observed hand histories. This is particularly helpful when:

  1. you try a new higher stake level.
  2. you try a new online poker room.

Because instead of having an empty database, this gives you the ability to start from the onset with a database already full of information about the regulars.

Idleminer's hand grabber is available for the following poker rooms: PartyPoker, Pacific Poker (888.com), Full Tilt Poker, Bodog Poker, Absolute Poker and the Ongame Network (Bwin, EuroPoker, HollywoodPoker, RedKings).
